GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY WITH MASS SPECTROMETER SHIMADZU QP 2010 (GCMS-QP2010)

The GC-MS Shimadzu QP101 PLUS equipment is contained within in the research facilities owned by the Research Centre on Fundamental and Applied Heterochemistry (METALOMICA), which aims the role of heteroatoms in various areas of chemistry: form organic heterocyclic and organometallic synthetic chemistry to the study of inorganic and bio-inorganic systems. The topics of research generally cover synthetic methodology, green chemistry and chemical analysis for the development of novel chemical compounds and materials as well as the exploration of distinctive structure – properties relationships significant in drug design, functional dyes applications and understanding their interactions with biological systems. GC-MS couple has a wide variety of applications because of its ability to detect with high accuracy many types of organic molecular compounds.

The GC-MS Shimadzu QP101 PLUS system consists of:

  • Gas chromatograph
  • Autosampler with 150 positions
  • Quadrupole Mass spectrometer
  • Alternative ionization modes: Electron impact ionization (EI), Chemical ionization (CH4/ NH3) (CI), and negative chemical ionization (NCI), with the possibility of varying the ionization energy (<70eV).
  • Direct introduction sample inlet unit

GC-MS Technical Specifications

  • Signal Detected: Molecular ions and characteristic fragment ions
  • Elements Detected: Molecular ions up to m/z 800
  • Detection Limits: ~1 ng of sample to be introduced in to the column.

Limitation of GC-MS analysis:

  • The compounds that are examined must be volatile or semi-volatile for gas chromatography separation. The sample matrix must be free of non-volatile substances, or a suitable method must be used to prevent the non-volatile matter from entering the gas chromatograph.
