{"id":218,"date":"2023-05-25T12:19:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T12:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.ubbcluj.ro\/infrastructure\/?p=218"},"modified":"2023-05-25T12:19:57","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T12:19:57","slug":"center-for-high-performance-computing-of-babes-bolyai-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.ubbcluj.ro\/infrastructure\/center-for-high-performance-computing-of-babes-bolyai-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for High Performance Computing of Babes-Bolyai University"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Center for High Performance Computing of Babes-Bolyai University is jointly operated by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science via the Research Center of Modeling, Optimization and Simulation&nbsp; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.ubbcluj.ro\/mos\/\">http:\/\/www.cs.ubbcluj.ro\/mos\/<\/a>) and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration via the Business Informatics Research Center (<a href=\"http:\/\/ccie.econ.ubbcluj.ro\/\">http:\/\/ccie.econ.ubbcluj.ro\/<\/a>). The Center for High Performance Computing serves as an infrastructure for computational research at the Babe\u0219-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca. Our HPC infrastructure supports research groups in a variety of scientific domains such as mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, business\/economics , biology, geography, meteorology, and &nbsp;communication science, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Center for High Performance Computing was born within the <a href=\"http:\/\/madecip.granturi.ubbcluj.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MADECIP project<\/a> \u2013 \u201cDisaster Management Research Infrastructure Based on HPC\u201d (\u201cDezvoltarea Infrastructurii de Cercetare pentru Managementul Dezastrelor Bazat pe Calcul de \u00cenalt\u0103 Performan\u0163\u0103\u201d). This project was granted to Babe\u015f-Bolyai University, its funding being provided by the Sectoral Operational Programme \u201cIncrease of Economic Competitiveness\u201d, Priority Axis 2, co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund \u2013 \u201cInvestments in Your Future\u201d (POSCEE COD SMIS CSNR 48806\/1862).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infrastructure was upgraded throughout the following project: \u201cUpgrade of the Cloud Infrastructure of the Babe\u0219-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca in Order to Develop an Academic Management and Decision Support Integrated System Based on Big&amp;Smart Data \u2013 SmartCloudDSS\u201d \u2013 POC\/398\/1\/1\/124155 \u2013 a Project Co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Competitiveness Operational Programme 2014-2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/research.ubbcluj.ro\/infrastructure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cluster-FSEGA-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.ubbcluj.ro\/infrastructure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cluster-FSEGA-002.jpg 600w, https:\/\/research.ubbcluj.ro\/infrastructure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cluster-FSEGA-002-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.ubbcluj.ro\/infrastructure\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cluster-FSEGA-002-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The system serves two main purposes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A. <strong>High Performance computing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Two interconnected clusters are available for HPC:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>a1. IBM NextScale cluster located in the FSEGA Building<\/em>, with the following technical description:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Performance: Rpeak 62 Tflops (theoretical), Rmax 40 Tflops (practical)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>68 nodes Nx360 M5 computing nodes, of which<ul><li>50 nodes with 2x Intel Xeon E5-2660 v3 CPU, 10 cores<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>12 nodes with 2x Intel Xeon E5-2660 v3 CPU, 10 cores and 2x Nvidia K40X GPU<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>6 nodes with 2x Intel Xeon E5-2660 v3 CPU, 10 cores and Intel Phi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CPU: 2 processors Intel Xeon E5-2660 v3 with 10 cores per node<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memory: 128 GB RAM per node<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage: 2 HDD SATA 500 GB per node<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast networking: 56 Gb\/s (Infiniband Mellanox FDR switch SX6512 with 216 ports, 1:1 subscription rate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage: NetApp E5660 disk storage equipment, 120 HDD SAS with 600 Gb\/HDD. Total storage: 72Tb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IBM GPFS 4.x as parallel file system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Backup: IBM TS3100 tape library for data archiving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operating system on nodes: RedHat Linux 6 with subscription<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HPC management software: IBM Platform HPC 4.2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Others: 2 management nodes, 2 NSD, Fast Ethernet switches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>a2. DELL cluster<\/em> located in the main UBB building on Kogalniceanu street, Cluj-Napoca, with the following technical description<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>12 x DELL PowerEdge R640 servers with:<ul><li>CPU: 2 x Intel Xeon Gold 6230 @ 2.10 GHz, 20 cores each<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Memory: 512 GB RAM<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Storage: 2 x 450 GB SSD disk<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Network: 4x NIC Ethernet 10Gbps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage Unit Dell EMC Unity 380: 48TB RAW, 8x FiberChannel ports 16Gbps, 8x SFP+ 10Gbps ports, 128 GB cache memory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FiberChannel switch \u2013 16 ports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 x Fast networking switch with 10Gbps, 40Gbps &amp; 100Gbps ports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The two clusters are interconnected with a high-speed link of 40Gbps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer specific HPC software for various domains like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intel Parallel Studio Cluster Edition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matlab, Mathematica<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Totalview Rogue-wave<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lumerical FDTD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comsol Multiphysics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gaussian<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Materials Studio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B. Cloud computing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An IBM FlexSystem consists of&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 virtualization servers IBM Flex System x240<ul><li>128GB RAM\/server<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2x Intel Xeon E5-2640 v2 processor\/server<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2x SSD SATA 240 Gb\/server<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 server for management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private Cloud software: IBM cloud with OpenStack manager 4.2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitoring and management software: IBM Flex System Manager software stack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtualization software: VMware vSphere Enterprise 5.1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The clusters are extensively used in various computing intensive research within Babes-Bolyai, such as artificial intelligence, chemistry, physics, biology, disaster management, environment, psychology, economics and business studies etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access policy and costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The system functions 24\/24, users being able to access it with a username and a password. The access to the system is limited only from computers identified with a BBU IP address. The system is open to no-cost access to all researchers and students of BBU. External researchers could get access to the computing infrastructure if they demonstrate involvement in a research project or activity done in collaboration with our university. Before granting access, users need to sign and agree the access usage agreement available at \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hpc.cs.ubbcluj.ro\/new-user-form\/\">http:\/\/hpc.cs.ubbcluj.ro\/new-user-form\/<\/a>.
